Buggs Island to Beechwood Flats Trail Development
The trail from Buggs Island to Beechwood Flats stretches for 5.3 miles from point to point. Side trips up Allen's Creek, around Buggs Island, Beechwood Flats, Miles Creek or Flat Creek can more than quadruple that distance and offer those with more endurance the chance to explore the upper reaches. For shorter trips try launching at the Steel Bridge Landing or Miles Creek and explore Beechwood Flats, Miles Creek or paddle up to Cotton Creek.
The current from the Tailrace to the Steel Bridge is 3-5 mph during releases and needs to be considered when planning your route. This is a very comfortable float if launching at the Tailrace. If you are launching at the Steel Bridge and want to paddle a loop trail, the Beechwood Flats to Miles Creek cut-thru offers a sneaky way to cheat the current. Please consult our map of this route (available summer 2012) or just go explore on your own. At the present the Buggs Island launch site offers all the amenities one could need including the Tanner Environmental Education Center, Camping and nearby restaurants. Explore miles of hiking Dick Cross Wildlife Management Area or the shorter Liberty Hill Nature Trail.
