Blueways
Buggs Island to Steel Bridge – Accessible from Buggs Island Rd. or Historic US1 this trail offers many interesting and diverse attractions. Options for loop routes or downstream with side creeks (up to 10+ miles) of scenic paddling. Best Bald Eagle, Osprey and Turkey viewing during all seasons. Difficulty: Flat water/Easy- Upper Hawtree Creek – Access Peete Farm Road boat ramp and paddle the beautiful wooded shoreline cove and upper reach. Look for Wood Duck, Beaver, Osprey and occasional Bald Eagles. Difficulty: Flat water/Easy
- Clements Island & Baker Island – Accessible from either side of river, this trail on Roanoke Rapids Lake offers reliable all-season bird viewing and meandering paddle trails through grassy islands (2-4 miles varies). Difficulty: Flat water/Easy
- Roanoke Rapids Tailrace to Weldon Falls – Access beneath Hwy 48/Gaston Road at VGIF boat ramp and paddle one of the many routes to the VGIF boat ramp just east of Hwy 301/158 (5.5 miles). Difficulty: Flat water/Easy to moderate depending on route. See Weldon Falls Class 1-2-3 rapids.
- Meherrin River Canoe Trail – Explore the Meherrin River and Whittle's Mill Park. (25.5 miles Rt. 712 or 634 to US1 - with numerous access points alogn the way) Difficulty: Flat water/Easy
- Butcher and Rudd's Creek Upper Reach – launch at Rudd's Creek Boat Ramp and explore the upper reaches of Butcher's and Rudd's Creeks. Difficulty: Flat water/Easy
- Staunton View Flats – Accessible from Staunton View Park. Paddle across to the Staunton River State Park or enjoy exploring the mouth of the Staunton and Dan Rivers and thier many hidden spots. Difficulty: Flat water/Easy
- Hyco River to Arron's Creek – Access at primitive boat ramp on the south side of US 58. Paddle (2.7 miles) down the Hyco River to the junction with the Dan/Roanoke. Explore the flats (unlimited)or continue downstream (1.7 miles) to Arron's Creek and return upstream (1.6 miles) to the boat ramp on US 58. Difficulty: Flat water/Easy to moderate depending on distance
- Weldon Falls – A favorite for paly boats. Accessible from Weldon Falls Park. Difficulty: Short run of Class 1-2-3 rapids. Moderate

- Staunton River Trail – Future paddle trail from Leesville Dam to Clarksville. The run from Long Island to Brookneal is already a favorite among local paddlers. Difficulty: Easy to moderate/Class 1-2 rapids and flat water
Greenways
- Dick Cross Wildlife Management Area/Elm Hill and Liberty Hill – miles of self guided walking, hiking and bicycling trails Difficulty: Easy to moderate
- Tobacco Heritage Trail – Access existing completed route in Broadnax & LaCrosse, Virginia and enjoy the hiking, bicycling and equestrian opportunities of this recently completed rails-to-trails section. Difficulty: Easy
- Ft. Christanna – Explore the treasured historic site of Ft. Christanna (off Hwy 46 south of Lawrenceville) and its pleasant walking paths overlooking the Meherrin River. Difficulty: Easy to moderate
- Occoneechee State Park – The Panhandle trail offers the best hiking around. Beautiful, natural wooded of hiking, bicycling or equestrian paths (up to 7 miles round trip) extend along the peninsula overlooking Kerr Lake. Don't forget the many other side trails within this favorite State Park rich in First American and Early colonial history. Difficulty: Easy
- Staunton River State Park – Strategically positioned at the confluence of the Dan and Staunton Rivers (now Kerr Lake) this beautiful park offers miles of hiking, bicycling and equestrian trails. Difficulty: Easy to moderate
- Merifield WMA and Old Soudan WMA – Accessible off of Hwy 15 just south of Clarksville, these trails offer a variety of wooded and open habitat for hiking and birding. Difficulty: Easy
- Newell Farms - Birding at Newell Farms provides an opportunity to visit the remote areas of a working cattle farm, managed for natural resource conservation. Difficulty: Easy
- Medoc Mountain – Located just north and east of Hollister. Seven hiking trails cover more than 11 miles of terrain throughout Medoc Mountain State Park. Stop by the visitor center to obtain a detailed map of the trail system before heading out. Difficulty: Easy to moderate
- The Roanoke Canal Trail – Miles of culturally rich trails wind along the banks of the old canals. Come enjoy the many varied hiking opportunities and the museum depicting an early life of trading along the river. · Roanoke Rapids Lake to Canal Museum: 45 minutes · Canal Museum to River Road: 45 minutes · River Road to the Aqueduct: 11/2 hours · The Aqueduct to River Falls Park: 45 minutes Difficulty: Easy to moderate
- Fox Pond Park – undergoing renovation this pleasant park offers a loop trail around a very scenic pond and park. Difficulty: Easy
- Bullocksville - The 1‐mile Ole Still Trail winds through a hardwood forest providing opportunities to see woodland species such as Summer and Scarlet Tanagers, Yellow‐throated Warbler, Brown‐headed and White‐breasted Nuthatches and Pileated Woodpecker.
